🚢 SS Euripides Passage Contract (1921): A Third-Class Voyage from Melbourne to London 🏴‍☠️

The SS Euripides Passage Contract, dated 21 May 1921, provides a rare glimpse into post-World War I transoceanic migration from Australia to England. This third-class travel document, issued by the Aberdeen Line, details the journey of Mr. W.G. Stevens and his family, emphasizing the logistical, legal, and economic aspects of ocean travel in the early 1920s.

As a primary source document, it holds significant value for teachers, students, genealogists, and historians, offering insights into ticketing procedures, voyage conditions, and the broader story of British-Australian migration.

🔍 Key Takeaways & Highlights

1️⃣ A Detailed Passenger Contract 📜

This contract was a binding agreement between the Aberdeen Line and passengers securing passage from Melbourne to London.

Third-class accommodations were typically reserved for working-class passengers, returning emigrants, or families relocating to Britain.

The cost of the ticket was £92 12s 6d, which, when adjusted for inflation, equates to an estimated £4,201.00 in 2020 currency—a significant financial commitment at the time.

2️⃣ Conditions & Provisions for the Journey 🍽️⛵

The contract explicitly states the meal rations, outlining the food supply per passenger per week.

Passengers were guaranteed 15 cubic feet of luggage space, a significant factor for emigrants transporting personal belongings overseas.

The document warns passengers that the Aberdeen Line was not responsible for lost or damaged baggage, emphasizing the risk of transoceanic travel.

3️⃣ Notable Provisions & Stipulations ⚖️📖

The "Passengers Act, 1855" governed the transport of emigrants, ensuring minimum food, water, and accommodations standards.

The contract specifies substitutions for rationed food items (e.g., "1 pound of preserved meat could be substituted for 1 pound of salt pork or beef").

Government oversight was in place—if passengers were denied boarding due to no fault of their own, they were advised to contact the Government Emigration Officer for assistance.

4️⃣ The Relevance of the SS Euripides 🚢

The SS Euripides was a prominent Aberdeen Line steamship, which frequently carried passengers between Australia, Britain, and Europe.

The vessel was a key part of post-war migration, facilitating the movement of Australians back to Britain and vice versa.

The ship represented a lifeline for families returning to the UK after economic hardships in Australia.
