RMS Aquitania Passenger List – 9 September 1939

Description

GGA is honored to present a Cabin Passenger List from the RMS Aquitania, dated 9 September 1939, a historic voyage and one of the last transatlantic crossings from Southampton to New York before the outbreak of World War II engulfed Europe in turmoil. The voyage occurred just six days after the declaration of war by Germany against Great Britain and France, making this passenger list a poignant artifact from the dawn of a new era.

The front cover, showcasing Cunard Line’s iconic branding, is a testimony to the maritime splendor of the “Ship Beautiful.” This artifact captures not only the luxury of transatlantic travel but also the urgency and uncertainty that marked this pivotal moment in history.

Notable VIP Passengers

The RMS Aquitania, known for carrying the elite and influential, hosted an exceptional roster of notable passengers on this journey. These individuals highlight the social, political, and cultural cross-section of transatlantic travelers on the brink of a global conflict:

3. Brig.-General E. R. FitzPatrick, C.B.E., D.S.O., D.L.

4. Sir James T. Currie, K.C.B.

  • A senior British civil servant, his presence emphasizes the high level of British governmental activity even in the earliest days of World War II.

5. Lady Margery Cruise

  • Representing the upper echelons of British society, her inclusion exemplifies the enduring connection between the UK and the US during wartime transitions.

6. Dean Roscoe Pound and Mrs. Pound

  • As the former Dean of Harvard Law School, Roscoe Pound was an intellectual luminary. His voyage suggests a continuation of academic and legal influence amidst global upheaval.

7. Air Vice-Marshal R. M. Hill, M.C., A.F.C.

  • A high-ranking officer in the Royal Air Force, Hill’s travel on this voyage may have had strategic implications, reflecting the ship's role as a vital link between Allied nations.

Historical Significance

This voyage marked one of the final crossings before the RMS Aquitania transitioned into wartime service as a troopship. The passenger list represents an extraordinary moment of transition—from luxury leisure travel to the necessities of wartime mobilization. The diversity of the roster, ranging from European aristocracy and American elites to military strategists and cultural figures, underscores the ship’s role as a nexus of global influence.

Historical Note

The 9 September 1939 RMS Aquitania Passenger List is a rare artifact from a pivotal moment in history. Its connection to the last days of peace before World War II, coupled with its association with prominent global figures, ensures its place in maritime history, wartime memorabilia, and historical ephemera.
